Semester System with Credits


Since 2003, the University of Madras has introduced a semester system of education with credits. Every academic year is divided into two semester sessions, with each semester consisting of at least 90 working days/450 hours.

Choice Based Credit System

The University has introduced the CBCS (choice-based credit system) since the academic year 2008-2009. Under this system, in all UG courses, a candidate must earn a minimum of 140 credits. PG students must earn aminimum of 91 credits. The following is the UG Course Structure

  • Part I : Languages: TAMIL, HINDI and FRENCH
  • Part II: English
  • Part III: Core Subjects & Allied Subjects
  • Part IV:
  • i)a. Those who have not studied Tamil as a second language up to Std. XII will have to take a Tamil paper comprising two courses, which will be at the level of Std. VI.

    b. Those who have studied Tamil up to Standard XII and taken a non Tamil language under Part I shall take Advanced Tamil, comprising two courses.

    c. Others who do not fall under a. and b. categories can choose SEC-I offered by other departments comprising two courses.

  • ii)Skill Enhancement Course
  • iii)Environmental Studies
  • iv)Value Education
  • Part V:Extension Activities can be NSS, RRC, sports games, Rotaract, YRC, or any other service organization in the college

Examination Pattern

  • Under Graduate : External - 75 Marks | Internal - 25 Marks
  • Post Graduate : External - 75 Marks | Internal - 25 Marks
